LAFAYETTE, CA — Think of James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon — some of our most beloved performers have also been extraordinary songwriters, artists with a gift for weaving melody, lyrics and lived experience into songs that tell a story.
There’s something special about hearing a song performed by the person who wrote it.
On Friday, October 9, Front Porch Music brings that experience to Town Hall Theatre with Songs From the Heart: An Evening of Original Songs Performed by the Songwriters. This intimate evening on the main stage will feature six accomplished Bay Area songwriters performing all original music.
Brian Lemco, Coale Johnson, Lorna Kollmeyer, Laura Zucker, Kenon Chen and Sara Glaser will take the stage, trading songs in the classic songwriter-in-the-round tradition. One songwriter performs, then the next, then the next — and around they go, giving the audience a chance to experience six very different voices and the stories behind their songs.
Some songs may make you laugh. Some may hit surprisingly close to home and make you cry. And some may stay with you long after the evening is over.
MEET THE SONGWRITERS
Brian Lemco
Canadian-born singer-songwriter Brian Lemco began writing and performing in Western Canada in the late 1970s and early ’80s before stepping away from music for more than two decades to raise a family and pursue a career in graphic design. A songwriting group eventually drew him back, inspiring a new chapter of writing, performing and recording original music.
Coale Johnson
Singer-songwriter and guitarist Coale Johnson brings a free-spirited sensibility to both his songwriting and guitar playing. Drawing from folk, rock, blues, country and jazz, his music crosses boundaries easily, creating an eclectic sound with plenty of personality — and what Coale describes as a little “twang.”
Lorna Kollmeyer
Bay Area singer-songwriter Lorna Kollmeyer brings warmth, liveliness and sincerity to her performances. A familiar face on local stages, Lorna has a natural way of connecting with an audience, and this evening offers a chance to hear her step forward as a songwriter and share her own original work.
Laura Zucker
Award-winning Lafayette singer-songwriter Laura Zucker has a knack for turning real life into songs filled with sharp observation, humor, heart and memorable melodies. A three-time Kerrville NewFolk finalist and five-time West Coast Songwriters Best Song of the Year winner, Laura has released six collections of original music and is the author of SongC.R.A.F.T. — Writing Songs In Your Authentic Voice.
Kenon Chen
Award-winning songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Kenon Chen has been creating music since the age of eight. His work ranges from intimate singer-songwriter material to electronic pop, and his songs have been published for film, television and other recording artists. He is also a two-time West Coast Songwriters Song of the Year winner.
Sara Glaser
Sara Glaser is a storyteller with a songwriter’s imagination. Her songs wander from California fires, peace and war to a burned-out Nashville songwriter, a besotted firebug, an ex-lover lookalike and an itinerant banjo player. Her 2022 album, Cinders in the Wind, showcases her distinctive blend of folk, Americana, wit and storytelling, and she is currently working on her next recording.

Front Porch Music is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Lafayette, California, dedicated to supporting adult musicians and enriching the cultural fabric of our community. Through live performances, songwriter gatherings, open mics and other programs, Front Porch Music creates opportunities for musicians to connect, grow and share their music with the community.
